Do you need a VPN for IPTV?

Many IPTV sellers insist you need a VPN. With a legitimate UK service, you don't. Here is what a VPN does and doesn't do, and when one is worth having.

The short answer

A legitimate UK IPTV service does not need a VPN. Our service works on standard UK broadband with no VPN required. If a seller tells you a VPN is essential, ask why. The usual reason is that its streams are being blocked because they are unlicensed.

What a VPN does

A VPN (virtual private network) encrypts your internet traffic and sends it through a server elsewhere. That can:

  • hide which sites you visit from your broadband provider
  • protect you on public Wi-Fi, such as in hotels or cafés
  • make it look as though you are in a different location.

What a VPN doesn’t do

  • It doesn’t make illegal streaming legal. The law is the same with or without one. See Is IPTV legal in the UK?
  • It doesn’t make you anonymous to the service. Illegal providers hold your email and payment details, and seized customer data has led to warning letters.
  • It doesn’t improve quality. It usually reduces speed.

Why VPNs and illegal IPTV go together

UK courts have granted orders requiring the major broadband providers to block illegal streaming servers, especially during live football. Sellers of unlicensed services push VPNs, or bundle a “built-in VPN”, to get around those blocks. See why ISPs block IPTV.

When a VPN is reasonable

  • Using public Wi-Fi and wanting general privacy.
  • Your workplace or a shared network filters streaming. Ask the network owner first.

If our service misbehaves while a VPN is on, turn the VPN off first. See playback and login errors.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a VPN for your service?

No. Our service is designed to work on standard UK broadband without a VPN.

Are VPNs legal in the UK?

Yes, using a VPN is legal in the UK. But a VPN does not make watching unlicensed content legal.

Why do some IPTV providers include a "built-in VPN"?

Usually because their streams are being blocked by UK broadband providers under court orders, which is a sign the service is unlicensed.

Can a VPN cause buffering?

Yes. Routing traffic through a VPN server adds distance and processing, which can cut speed and cause buffering, especially during live sport.
